The shepherd contributes to the theme that power does not give knowlegde. Oedipus who was king could not solve the mystery of Laius' murder by himself, he needed outside knowlegde. The shepherd who was a slave and a very low class person, knew the entire story and therefore held all the power. He was the one that was able to bring down the king and brought the curse upon him because he did not kill Oedipus as a baby. Sophocles uses the shepherd to illustrate that people do not always appear as they seem. A lowly shepherd is not thought to have knowledge however a king is, the irony of switching the roles gives the common person something to relate to.
